Join the SPL this Women's History Month to hear Women in World Jazz present: Hear Their Voices. A tribute dedicated to women composers of color in the US and around the globe.
Women in World Jazz will share information about the composers and their music, as well as engage the audience with a Q&A and discussion at the end of the program.
The concert features diverse musical styles ranging from Blues and Jazz to Latin, Brazilian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern. The group strives to educate and share the stories from these women’s lives, and their culture with audiences in MA. They applaud artists such as Mahalia Jackson, who was an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, or Celia Cruz, the queen of Salsa who was an important ambassador for Cuban culture. We will groove to soulful jazz and blues music composed by the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. Women in World Jazz is also teaching and collaborating with young musicians, creating a multi-generational performing ensemble which celebrates history, equality and hope.
