Saturday, November 21:30—3:00 PMAuditoriumCentral Library79 Highland Ave, Somerville , MA, 02143
This month, the library is pleased to display the artwork of local artist Samantha Lipsky in the Gallery @ SPL with her exhibition: Timid Taxidermy. Please join us for a reception celebrating the exhibit.
About the Exhibit:
I live for mixing colors and dancing between the water and paint on my brush. "Timid Taxidermy" was inspired by curious photos from critters on the internet and the dark comedy series, “Bad Sisters.” Some animals look inherently mysterious. Consider the questioning looks from a square-pupiled goat. Other critters just happened to emote into a camera, forever frozen expressions, stuffed in time. Mischief, angst, hurt, trepidation, what are they feeling? Frozen pictures, like taxidermy provide interpreted essence without dialog.
Within our own species, glances are subject to interpretation—sometimes clearly conveyed and other times incomprehensible. Verbal cues augment the visual. As everyday-face-to-face interactions lessen, verbal and visual are increasingly replaced by text. Are we destined to lose synchronous conversation? When we scroll, swipe, and text, are we dialoging to our interpretations of frozen moments?
