Saturday, September 32:00—4:00 PMAuditoriumCentral Library79 Highland Ave, Somerville , MA, 02143

The library is pleased to display the artwork of local artist Megumi in the Gallery @ SPL with her exhibition: Sketching as Meditation. Please join us for a reception celebrating the exhibit.

About the Exhibit:

Etegami is a style of painting with a message that comes from Japan. It captures everyday images with your thoughts in short sentences. After I moved from Japan to Massachusetts, there were so many feelings about me, my family, and neighborhood that I struggled to express in English. So I turned to the Etegami style, using Sumi ink, to draw and record how I felt and what I saw.

This exhibit was made using disposable wood chopsticks and Sumi ink. Etegami can be made with any tools, and this exhibit may inspire others to try and have fun with this classic style of art.

About the Artist:

Megumi is a Japanese mixed media artist. Her favorite medium is watercolor pencils. Her watercolor pencil work was exhibited in the Boston Neighborhood Network Art Gallery in 2017. In 2018 and 2019 her mixed media art was awarded an honorable mention at Quincy ArtsFest.

Recently she has been doing more digital drawing. In 2021, her digital drawings were featured in the Patriot Ledger Christmas art contest. Megumi also writes a webcomic blog for Japanese audiences, mainly focused on her life experiences in the US. She also participates in local art groups including Boston Urban Sketchers.

Digital artwork is easy to fix or erase. Sumi ink is not erasable and part of its beauty is that it captures an unalterable moment. Each stroke with Sumi ink requires deep concentration and can be a kind of meditation.
